When I was in high school, there was no MySpace or Facebook. I didn't have a cell phone until senior year. Instant Messenger was only in its infancy when I was graduating, and rumors were spread the old fashioned way- face to face.
It occurred to me today that the internet and electronic devices have made things much easier, and at the same time much more difficult. Now life is like that game of telephone with one person whispering "Timmy has boogies" into the other persons ear, only at high speed. Oh the miscommunication that can ensue. I am barely a member on Facebook and only because it seemed interesting to keep in touch with old friends. I don't like talking on my cell phone, I'm not good on the phone. I can't see peoples expressions so I don't know if they need to talk or if they're just using me to get through their mundane grocery shopping trip.
Email and texting are great, and I use both to excess. But again, there's a problem. Tone. How do you properly read a text message such as, "Ok". There are hundreds of ways "ok" can be said. (or is that just a woman thing?)
I guess I just wish things were a little simpler again. I think maybe I was born in the wrong era. Take me home country roads....horse drawn carriages, homemade food, outdoor play for kids instead of video games, and old fashioned talking to people. To their faces. Where someone's word actually means something.
I guess I can hope.
Now excuse me while I go text some people, check my email, and post on Facebook.
